Your Reputation Is More Important Than Revenge: How to Respond When Folks Lie, Gossip, or Betray You

Apr 20, 2026

In this episode of Deciding to Soar: Living Life Your Own Way, I share one of the most powerful lessons my elders ever taught me: Your reputation is more important than revenge.

For many years, I only understood this phrase intellectually. But about 15 years ago, I had an experience that forced me to understand this phrase on an emotional and spiritual level.

Because around that time, someone I trusted deeply began spreading falsehoods about me. Not only did I feel betrayed, but the slander affected my business, my health, and my reputation. And in moments like that, the desire to defend yourself—or even seek revenge—can feel overwhelming.

In this episode, I talk honestly about those emotions and why they are completely normal when someone lies about you, misrepresents your work, spreads gossip, or betrays your trust.

I also share a framework I developed called The Five A’s of Protecting Your Reputation, which has helped me navigate difficult moments with clarity and integrity:

  • Acknowledge the wound
  • Assess the impact
  • Arrange your response
  • Activate your plan
  • Continue healing and stay open

This episode was a hard one, and is for anyone who has ever felt misrepresented, betrayed, or misunderstood. It’s also for anyone who needs ideas on ways to respond that protect both their character and peace.

Remember: Revenge may feel satisfying in the moment, but when you damage your reputation, the effects can last a lifetime.

The good news is that when your reputation is rooted in integrity, it will speak for you in places where you may not have access.
